The alloy also resists carburization and sulfidation, so furnace muffles, radiant tubes, and combustion chambers hold their integrity over years of service rather than months.

309S limits carbon to a maximum of 0.08%, reducing the possibility of carbide precipitation during welding. That single change improves weldability and reduces intergranular corrosion near heat-affected zones, making 309S the preferred pick for fabricated assemblies with multiple weld joints. Standard 309 still works where carbon content matters less and raw strength takes priority.
